Martin Hall here with Five Star Golf mats. I'm on the Residential Mat, which is a wonderful mat to practice your short game, indoors or outdoors, for that matter. But particularly indoors in the winter months, or perhaps when you're hitting into a net at home something like that. There's enough softness, there's enough absorption in this mat, that you can get the club under the ball correctly. Some mats not so much, this very much so.

Look, a big mistake that I see in the short game is people try and lift the ball. They scoop at the ball, they try and get under it, their trail eye, the rear eye, gets too close to the ground. They're trying to scoop it. That's not it. Here's the tip: L. E. D. Lead Eye Down. When you set up, you want your lead eye to be closer to the ground than your trail eye. What does that do? It helps you have a slightly steeper angle of attack. And with the correct ball position, it helps you scuff the ground or brush the mat. I think you can see right here I'm brushing the mat past the ball, which is just what you want. You don't want any of this trying to lift it. The loft creates the lift, not you trying to scoop it.

So here we go. I'm going to set up the balls about middle, maybe back, I'm turning my lead eye, I'm also looking at the front edge of that golf ball because that also helps me just trap the ball as I go through. So, set up, lead eye down, look at the front of the ball, that should help me make really nice crisp ball/turf contact. Here we go! Just what I would want about 10 ft past the hole. I would take that just about every time, so that should help you.
