Martin Hall: Martin here for Five Star Golf Mats. We're on the 5x5 commercial Octagon Mat, which is designed to react and feel just like real grass and provide accurate feedback. I'm with my friend, Chris Didio, the head professional here at the club at Ibis, we've known each other a year or two, haven't we?

Chris Didio: Yes, we have.

Martin Hall: And you teach quite a bit out here at Ibis?

Chris Didio: I do.

Martin Hall: Yeah, now we know that most players struggle with speed. They don't have
enough speed. Everybody would like to hit the ball farther, wouldn't they?

Chris Didio: Absolutely.

Martin Hall: So, here's a little drill you can use in your teaching, you can even use in your game if you like. I call it the “Up, Down, Up”. There's no doubt the body provides a lot of power in the golf swing, but what the hands do is essential. I'm going to demonstrate left-handed as if you are seeing a mirror image. What I like people to think of is: as you go back the thumbs have got to go up. As you come down, you must get the thumbs down at the ground. And as you swing through, the thumbs have to come up again. It's up, down, up. Up, down, up! A lot of people are just moving the club to and fro, and the thumbs are staying down too long. Up, down, up! Give me one practice swing like that, Chris. Up, down, up! And when you do that, I can hear a nice little swish down here at the bottom of the swing. Do you think you can give me an up, down, up?

Chris Didio: I’ll give it my best.

Martin Hall: And hit one of your beautiful shots into to this strong breeze this morning? Very good, very good shot. Not just a great head pro, also an extremely good player, my friend, Chris Didio. Listen, if you want hit it farther, we all do! Then make sure your hands go up, down, up.
That's going to help!
