Which Golf Mat is Right For You?
What Golf Mat is right for me?
At Five Star Golf Mats, we take pride in producing each mat right here in the USA. From our Dayton, TN plant where we extrude our own polypropylene and nylon yarns, to our Dalton, GA facility where we handle tufting, coating, foam padding, and hole punching, we oversee every step of production. This allows us to ensure the highest quality in every component of our golf mats.
The 3 considerations
When determining the right mat for you, one should consider the following:
Knowing what size golf mat to buy is always a mystery to most folks. Β We can simplify this for you!
Β First, just to give you a reference, it might help to know most driving ranges use mats that are 5' x 5'. Β
Β Golf Practice Mats should be purchased based on your height (or the height of the tallest person who will be using it).
Β Your Height: 5Β΄ tall to 5Β΄ 3": Β Mat Size: 3' x 5'
Β If you are 5Β΄ 4" and taller: Β Mat Size: Β 4' x 5' and larger
If you want to really make sure you get the right size, we recommend you go get your driver, some masking tape and a tape measure. Β Measure and tape off the size you are thinking about getting in your garage or basement. Β (Example, if you are thinking of getting a 4' x 5' golf mat, tape out a 4' x 5' rectangle on your garage floor.)
Β
Β Grab your driver and get inside the rectangle (the 4' side will be the width and the 5' side will be the length. Β The 5' side should be in front of you - the 4' width will be for your stance).
Β
Β Take a few swings just like you would on the course. Β Don't try to change your swing to stay in the taped area. Β If you find the taped area to be too small, tape the next size up and try again. Β If you are able to swing your driver comfortably, you are good to go!
Durability: Material Matters
When choosing the right golf mat, the material it's made from is a critical factor in determining its durability and performance. Most golf mats are made from one of three materials: Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), or Nylon. Each material reacts differently to friction and heat generated when your club strikes the mat, which directly impacts its longevity.
Pile Height plus pad density-
Residential mats- 9/16β pile height of the Polypropylene turf combined with a 5mm PE padding for a total thickness of ΒΎβ (20mm)
Advantage-Β 9/16β pile height of the Polypropylene turf combined with the 5/8β closed cell PE padding for a total thickness of 1 ΒΌβ (32mm)
Commercial- 9/16β pile height of the Nylon turf combined with the 5/8β Β closed cell PE padding for a total thickness of 1 ΒΌβ (32mm)
Perfect Reaction- 1β pile height of the Nylon turf combined with a 5/8β closed cell PE padding for a total thickness of 1 3/4β (45mm)
With our commitment to quality and control over the manufacturing process, Five Star Golf Mats provide durability and performance you can rely on for your practice sessions. Choose the right material, and choose Five Star for the best results on the green.

Most golf mats are made from one of three materials: Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), or Nylon. Each material reacts differently to friction and heat generated when your club strikes the mat, which directly impacts its longevity.
- Polyethylene (PE): With the lowest melting point of around 220Β°F, PE mats will be the least durable. Β You will notice quickly a green residue on your clubs. PE golf mats will generally come with a lower price tag. However, this comes at the cost of durability.Β Five Star Golf Mats will never sell a PE Mat.
- Polypropylene (PP): Offering a significantly higher melting point of about 320Β°F, PP mats are more durable than PE. We manufacture our own high-quality polypropylene yarn in our Dayton facility, ensuring a longer lifespan and better performance for our golf mats. While a significant increase in durability over the PE mat, The PP mat will be lease durable than a Nylon mat. Β PP mat offers a compromise on durability for price. Β Depending on your anticipated frequency of use, PP could be the right mat for you.
- Nylon: Β Nylon has the highest melting point at approximately 430Β°F. This makes it the best choice for durability. Nylon mats are built to withstand intense wear and heat, providing golfers with the longest-lasting option available. Like polypropylene, our nylon yarn is also produced in our Dayton plant.
